The History of Fort Pickens

To many people in Pensacola, Fort Pickens is just an old fort at the far end of Pensacola Beach. But to those who appreciate history, it is an interesting structure that, along with Fort McRee and Fort Barrancas, defended Pensacola's deepwater port from attack.

On today's radio program, I interviewed Park Ranger Cas Rosiecki about Fort Pickens. We discussed the fort's construction, Civil War activities, and its recently discovered role in the Underground Railroad. He also explained Geronimo's imprisonment at the massive island structure along with its current status as part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
